Disney has showed no sign of slowing down with their live-action films based on the classic animated tales from the days when Walt Disney was developing some of the most cherished childhood films. This time, the iconic children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh is the inspiration for this story in which Winnie the Pooh’s childhood friend Christopher Robin is now a working adult and forgotten about any sense of imagination.
Christopher, who is played by Ewan McGregor, is reunited with the famous characters from the Hundred Acre Wood and with their help, learns to embrace the imaginative child that still lives inside him.
Christopher Robin will be released on August 3rd, 2018 and will feature the voices of Jim Cummings who talks for Winne the Pooh and Tigger, Brad Garrett as Eeyore, Toby Jones as Owl, Nick Mohammed as Piglet, Peter Capaldi as Rabbit, Sophie Okonedo as Kanga, and Sara Sheen as Roo.
(Release Date: December 21st)
While DC Films haven’t had as much of an impact on moviegoers and box office as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, audiences are highly anticipating to see comic hero Aquaman live on the big screen. Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa takes on the title role and while the character of Aquaman has been featured in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), this is the first full-length film in which Aquaman is the lead character.
Aquaman has been in production for over 10 years and anticipation has been highly positive since Momoa was cast as the lead role of Arthur Curry/Aquaman.
The film will be released on December 21st, 2018.
(Release Date: November 21st)
In 2015, we were introduced to the incredible spin-off to the Rocky film franchise, Creed, in which Rocky Balboa trains Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky’s former rival Apollo Creed to follow in his father’s footsteps as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in the world.
In this sequel, Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed as he is once again trained by Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) for the fight of his life: to defeat the son of Ivan Drago, the man who killed his father in the ring 30 years earlier.
Creed II is set to be released on November 21st, 2018 and is expected to live up to the ferocity of the first film.
(Release Date: September 7th)
Audiences were first introduced to the terrifying image of “The Nun” in 2016’s The Conjuring 2. Just like the Annabelle films, The Nun is a spin-off from The Conjuring series. The film takes place at a Romanian Abbey that is being haunted by a demonic Nun.
The Nun will be released on September 7th, 2018 and stars Taissa Farmiga, which is fitting because she is the younger sister of Vera Farmiga who is the star of The Conjuring films.
Mary Poppins Returns
(Release Date: December 19th)
Quite possibly the longest gap between an original film and a sequel (54 Years!), this sequel to the 1964 musical has Emily Blunt in the title role as Mary Poppins returns to London 25 years later to visit Jane and Michael who are now all grown up. Using her whimsical style, Mary Poppins teaches Michael’s children how to embrace fantasy and magic while also encouraging Michael and Jane to revisit their youth.
Along with Emily Blunt, the film stars Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Meryl Streep, and Dick Van Dyke who also starred in the original Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins Returns was scheduled to be released on December 25th but it was recently announced that the film would be released in theaters a week earlier on December 19th.
(Release Date: November 2nd)
This biographical film seemed to have been in production for years without any sign of completion. But in May of 2018, the first trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody was released and now November can't come soon enough! The film tells the story of the rise of famous rock band Queen, with the central focus of the film being on lead member Freddie Mercury and the legacy he left as he and his band prepare for their historical Live Aid concert in 1985, a fundraising event to help put a stop to the AIDS crisis. Freddie Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS around this time and it eventually ended his life.
Rami Malek will be playing the legendary man and Bohemian Rhapsody is set to be released on November 2nd, 2018. Bohemian Rhapsody is a celebration of the impact Queen left on music, entertainment, and pop culture. The film will feature some of the group’s most iconic songs.
(Release Date: October 5th)
Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, a journalist who after investigating suspicious lab research, becomes a hybrid host of an alien symbiote which gives him extraordinary superpowers and transforms him into his alter-ego Venom.
A spin-off from the Spider-Man franchise, Venom is quite possibly the most highly anticipated film of 2018. This is the first film to be a part of Sony’s Marvel Universe and unlike many of the other Marvel characters, Venom has a much darker undertone.
Venom will be released in theaters on October 5th, 2018.
A Star is Born
(Release Date: October 5th)
In the fourth adaptation of this story about fame, love, and the pain that comes with it, Bradley Cooper, who in his Directorial debut plays a famous musician who takes an unknown singer under his wing and falls in love with her. Soon, success and romance collide, and it creates a drama-filled plot. The singer that Cooper becomes infatuated with is played by Lady GaGa, in her major motion picture debut.
This is the fourth time A Star is Born has been retold on the big screen.
The first film was released in 1937 to critical acclaim and starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The second adaptation was released in 1954 and was an extravagant musical that starred Judy Garland and James Mason. The third remake of the film was released in 1976 and it starred Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson and it launched one of the biggest soundtracks of the decade. With Lady GaGa in the starring role, there is no doubt that the film’s soundtrack will be epic! The trailer, which was officially released in June of 2018, had audiences on the edge of their seat.
A Star is Born will be released on October 5th, 2018, just in time for Awards season. Will Lady GaGa be adding an Oscar to her wall of trophies?
(Release Date: October 19th)
I am an avid fan of the slasher genre so when it was announced in mid-2017 that some of the original cast members from John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween would be returning in 2018 for one final battle between famous screen killer Michael Myers and the original Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.
40 years after the events of the original film, Halloween sees Michael Myers escaping from an Asylum and returning to Haddonfield, Illinois to confront Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), the woman who barely escaped his murder spree on Halloween night in 1978 and has been waiting all this time for the ultimate reunion.
There are 10 total films in the Halloween franchise, if you include Rob Zombie’s remakes, Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009), but I prefer to imagine that those two atrocities never existed. However, the new Halloween will be a direct sequel to the original film, ignoring the rest of the franchise. With that being said, many fans are speculating as to whether or not the brother-sister storyline between Michael and Laurie will even exist in this film, which is being directed by David Gordon Green, who also co-wrote the film with Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley.
Jamie Lee Curtis isn’t the only original cast member returning. Nick Castle, who played Michael Myers in the very first Halloween will also be returning as the sinister killer.
Early screenings of Halloween have been very positive, but audiences will not know for sure if this film can live up to it’s expectations until October 19th, 2018, a week before the 40th anniversary of the original film’s release.
